Otto shoves the letter forward. “Delivery,” he says dryly. “Mid finally remembered how to string words together instead of numbers.”

“Finally,” Cid says, and stubs his cigar out, reaching across the desk. Her devilish script, the Telamon specialty, declares his title. He slides a calloused finger beneath an edge, then looks up. “Oi. You have ten?”

“What? Is that my name on there? No. You can tell me all about it later. Over dinner, which Kenneth has reported you’ve skipped. Again.”

Cid points to his wine-filled cup meaningfully, then shrugs, undeterred. “A poor way to say you’ve been missing my company.”

“Aye. Only your mug, not your filthy habits at the table.”

“If that’s the case, then I guess I’ll have to show some consideration,” he says.

“Better,” Otto snips. “Unless you want to find out how mean I really am.”

“My dear Otto,” Cid says, gesturing wide. “It wouldn’t be the first time.”

Otto shakes his head and departs with the remaining mail. “You enjoy yourself. I’ll be seeing you.”

Cid rises from the solar later, mind and heart full, and makes for the door well past supper.

Some things a man has to find out for himself.

Title: Practical Pursuits
Fandom: Final Fantasy XVI
Characters/pairing: Clive & Harpocrates
Rating: gen
Word Count: 160
Notes: End game (no spoilers); game mechanics / player resources. For [community profile] ffprompts , prompt: updated. I kept thinking about how librarians gave out stickers to good readers as a child and felt like Clive deserved the Valisthean equivalent too, lol.

“There is no feat more heroic than wrestling beasts and ne’er dwellers in the pursuit of knowledge. And you’ve traversed deep places indeed.”

Clive smiles. He knows it. He’s seen the rocky shores of Waloed and turned over rocks in the Dhalmekian desert and passed through skeletons of Fallen airships. “You’ve sent me on many of those quests. Between you and Vivian I feel well-informed.”

“Ah,” Harpocrates says, “But the true joy of learning is that we are all students until the end. Therefore — there is more to discover, yet.”

Clive waits. He’s unlocked level eight and attained mastery of The Thousand Tomes — surely not. He’s proven himself an ally of dialogs — and he won’t deny that his camaraderie has often resulted in badges of recognition to boast his allegiances.

He shuffles his feet. “Is there anything else?” he asks. “Before I ah, reload, that is.”

Harpocrates smiles serenely. “No, Clive. There is not. Knowledge hoarded is knowledge wasted.”
